Self-learning is a process, a method and a philosophy of education- in which a learner acquires knowledge by his or her own efforts and develops the ability for inquiry and critical evaluation. When we talk about current education, we often relate to a teacher, a brick-and-mortar facility (usually a school) and a group of students that gather together at this facility during specific periods of the day to learn from a teacher. The teacher will then take control on what should be learned and act as a role of knowledge dispensers and students as repositories.
Passive learning does not encourage critical thinking skills, the ability to actively apply information gained through experience and reasoning. It does not allow students to have deeper levels of understanding which is required for complex concepts and lifelong learning. The learning process is thus devalued as students are not encouraged to evaluate the problems and find answers or solutions to it, but just merely act as a passive listener and absorb the information being taught by their teacher.
However, research shows that people who take the initiative in learning (proactive learners) learn more things, and learn better, than people who sit at the teachers’ feet passively waiting to be taught (reactive learners).
Passive learning cause students to be always dependent on their teachers in every learning related matter. This trait suppresses the creative side of their personality and they never get to know their strengths. Compare to self-learning, the control in learning gradually shifts from teachers to learners. Children are now the dominant in learning. Children can exercise a great deal of independence in setting learning goals and deciding what is worthwhile learning as well as how to approach the learning task or problems. Thus, this increased the responsibility of learner to achieve their objectives and value of the goals.
In school, teachers have the responsibility to complete the education syllabus within a year even though many of the children were far below grade level. Therefore, weaker student tends to get demotivated when they could not achieve the same result as others. Soon as a result, this often leads children to lack interest in learning and achieving new things.
DOKUGAKU programs allows children to start at a comfortable starting point and will only gradually increase the level of challenges along the way. This allows children to keep experiencing the sense of accomplishment when they progress on their own to the next level without being taught. By allowing children to learn from the level that is “just right” for them, tends to help them build self-confidence and interest in learning.
DOKUGAKU enables children to develop the ability to learn independently from early age. Self-learning gives them the ability to also identify challenging problems and quickly look for effective solutions on their own. Therefore, when a new challenges or problems occur, it will not kill their drive to get things done. Instead, they are given the opportunity to learn something new at their own pace and time.
A person with strong problem-solving skills, can easily adapt to changes in the environment due to the ability to learn fast. As a result, DOKUGAKU is helping children to build a foundation in
achieving their goals and dreams when children grow up and step into the work force. When children practice errors making less correct response will result in them to become frustrated, setting the occasion for aggressive behavior and giving up. DOKUGAKU program promotes a teaching approach that limits incorrect responses by providing concept hints along the way to guide children when they are stuck. Hints will increase memory retention of what children has learn before is school as children get to recall the concepts.
Although by giving hints, there might be possibility for children to have error in their response. Therefore, DOKUGAKU program also provides a second chance for learners to practice their mistake again from the start if their understanding is poor towards that chapter. Along the trial and error process, children get to recall how they started learning the concept and how they eventually gained understanding. Studies shows that when an individual can grasp knowledge independently, tends to remember and retain the knowledge better. When a child re-trace his or her steps in correcting a mistake, helps them to avoid making the same mistake again since he can easily recall the problem.
DOKUGAKU programs require children to manage their timetable in order to free up extra time to learn new things from our daily worksheets and challenges. “Time is a created thing. To say 'I don't have time,' is like saying, 'I don't want to.” We understand that nowadays children are packed with school activities and extra curriculum. Therefore, our program is break up into short session that is suitable for children to manage into their timetable, and along the process, allows children to develop other skills such as time management.
Besides, skills such as self-assessment and goal setting skills will also be developed along DOKUGAKU learning process. In DOKUGAKU program, our goal settings and reward system are specially designed for learners to be responsible and critically aware of his or her own learning process and outcome. By implementing reward system into our program, tends to motivate children to set and achieve a goal.
By practicing the habit of self-learning during early childhood, tends to help children nurtures constant learning in their daily lives. People who are truly effective generally did not get that way by sitting still, however they apply themselves to constant learning and take initiative in competing against themselves to grow and learn day by day. In DOKUGAKU, children are now given the opportunity to understand the whole process of learning. As a result, children will learn the most essential skills to become lifelong learners: knowledge of how to learn. As one says “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime” by obtaining the skills of how to learn, rather than what to learn, allows children to grow and nourish the rest of their lives.
The best place for your child to study is a place in which there is nothing else to do but learn. In an environment like this, your child is much more likely to retain information that they have learned.
DOKUGAKU learning center is specially designed with green theme and mini green plants making it looks like a secret garden. It is proven that certain houseplants improve indoor air quality, and something green and alive just makes a study space more serene. DOKUGAKU learning center is set up to provide children a learning space where they can complete their daily activity without any distraction.
Instead of treating children learning session like a marathon, DOKUGAKU breaks up the material by topic into a series of short sessions. That way, children won’t be staring at their computer for too long while wearing on your focus, and their brain can absorb the material more easily.
Children will only need to spend 20 mins daily to practice our self-learning materials. The purpose of our program is to let children practice self-learning in short, frequent sessions which will lead to more effective way of learning.
Setting goals together with children and parents that realistically fit in with their lifestyle and other commitments are important when creating self-study habits.
Our learning center will be cooperating and assisting parents in their children time schedule to practice self-learning habits daily. Besides, we will also set goals with parents in monitoring children progress along the way.
